Excuse me, dga, but most Americans are smarter than that. We all know it's not the legal Hispanic population that is the problem. And most people do not discriminate against legals. We all work with them and they are here third and fourth and yes maybe even first generation. They have same culture we do. A blend of a particular stock into the main stream of American dreamers.
And if your children are looked at sideways, might I suggest you move them to a better part of the country?
Cause not everywhere is like that.

Yeah, Maybe I'll move to North Virginia or Missouri, Or better yet... drum roll please... TEXAS.

"Most Americans" think that if you speak with an accent, you think with an accent. "Most Americans" think Ecuador is in Africa. "Most Americans" can't find Uzbekistan (much less spell Uzbekistan) on a map, and thought that Kazakhstan was a country Borat made up for his movie (didn't we all). Just because you're that high minded (with Hispanics that you know), does not mean everyone is... statistics don't lie. "Most Americans" really think: If he looks Hispanic, speaks with an accent, and listens to latin music, he might be American, but most likely he's illegal (quack).

That said, we digress, simple as that. I have a different way of viewing things.

Upon reading this thread, I notice that there is a huge focus on the Hispanic population in the conversation. My perspective might be a bit different because I grew up in a large city...

Considering that there are illegals from many different countries, I find it unacceptable that these kinds of laws tend to focus on hispanics. Do you think that they are demanding the papers of the people with Romanian accents? It has been my experince that people generally don't. They aren't 'suspected' even though it is obvious that they are foriegn born.

NYC, and the surrounding areas, is as much a collection of little neighborhoods as it is a large city. It's not hard to find legal and illegal Russian, Jamaican, Korean or any other flavor of immigrant. Still, even here, people seem to focus on the Mexicans, like they are the source of all of the ills of this society and economy.

Very true, The focus on Mexicans also comes because they do not get visas (just cross the river) and thus there is no check at all. People who come here via plane (Europeans, Asians, most South Americans, etc.) need to get a visa, and in order to get one you have to be upper middle class and higher, as you must meet the US standards of likelihood to return to your country (measured in material ties, i.e. job, house, cars, etc.).

I was interested yesterday talking with my babysitter (who is Peruvian born) and her son who is a sophmore in high school. He made varsity football in freshman year, and was approached by two private high schools (he goes to public) with the offer of a scholarship. One of them is a school I have considered putting my daughter in once she gets to high school to give her better college opportunities (it is the next town over from ours). In any case, he turned them down. I was astonished and I asked him why. His answer? "The kids there are racist".

This kid is American and Hispanic. This is the message that the American youth is receiving, anti-immigrant, anti-Hispanic, divisiveness and bigotry.

Too bad he didn't ask me before, I would have told him to go ahead and accept the scholarship, just be sure to carry his American passport in his hand down the hall for the first couple of months,

I have to provide at least three kinds of ID in order to get a job; usually a birth certificate, voter registration, SS, and a picture ID. Not requiring this just because an hispanic might get offended, and I never met a legal American hispanic who did mind, is blatant discrimination against other races and minorities, no matter how you spin it.

That and the fact that they make up the vast majority of illegals, and especially the criminal element, in the border states. Latino or Central American would be more correct than Mexican, I guess, but in reality if you mean Mexicans you would be right most of the time.

First of all, none of those illegals mentioned above except Mexicans have a government actively promoting criminal illegal immigration and the violation of U.S. laws, and second, they are a drop in the bucket numbers wise in most of the country. They also aren't shutting down hospitals and clinics, and bankrupting school districts. Third, nobody has ever claimed they are responsible for all our ills, not that reducing the U.S. population back to pre-immigration bubble levels and growth rates would be a bad thing all by itself, and in fact would be a great thing for the country.

You are correct, the other government actively promoting criminal illegal immigration is not mentioned above... ours,
