I think you are missing the point. No one here is saying that the airport personnel did the wrong thing.
It is the fact that the relationship, which, to those two men, was the same as a marriage was not recognized legally that is unjust. If there was legal recognition of the union then Eric Breidenbaugh would have been an "an actual family member."
(Or at least he would have had that option. If he had not taken advantage of that option then the fact that he could not get info would have been his own fault.)
