State senator Gary George’s advice to the gay community? “Shut up!”

In his first media interview since coming forward as co-sponsor of the initiative to repeal the recently enacted Oregon Equality Act – an anti-discrimination law for sexual minorities – George railed against gay activists and affirmative action, and warned that if gays continued to be “oppressive toward straights,” they were in danger of “violent backlash.”



Just Out: What if an employee is fired because of his/her sexual orientation or gender identity? Isn't the Oregon Equality Act in place to guard against such discrimination?

George: As an employer, I don’t wanna hear about it. This workplace is for work purposes. My advice to the gay community is SHUT UP, just don’t talk about it. If you walk around talking about what you do in the bedroom, you should be on the pervert channel.

Does the straight community have to "shut up" on what they do in the bedroom... ? NO.....

I feel lucky to work for an employer that truly embraces diversity.

It's no more "weird" for me to have a picture of my wife on my desk than for my male coworker to have a picture of his wife on his desk.

I feel lucky, but I wish I felt nothing... because I wish my employer was not special in the embracing of diversity.

This just pisses me off for two reasons. First, the tone this gentleman takes when discussing issues relevant to gays and lesbians is deplorable. It shows he should not be in any decision making office at all.


Second, it pisses me off because he is right. Homosexuals and heterosexuals alike shouldn't be talking about bedroom activities while at work. I don't tolerate it from anyone and it has nothing to do with orientation. However, something tells me this guy wants gays to be quiet about more than the obvious.

The real problem is that most discrimination occurs not because a gay person talks about what they "do in the bedroom." Most of the time all, it is simply because they talk about with whom they are sharing their bedroom. (Or because someone else sees fit to spread that information.)

Few, if any, straight people have to fear losing their job because they happen to mention who they are dating, marrying, or shacking up with. Gay people shouldn't have to either.
