Children's Book About Same-Sex Penguin Couple Causes Flap in Virginia

LEESBURG, Va. — A children's book about two male penguins that hatch a chick together has been pulled from school library shelves in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Parents complained that the book has a gay agenda and have called for its removal. But supporters say the book's removal is censorship.

The decision by Superintendent Edgar Hatrick is being criticized by many parents and gay rights advocates. They say the school system shouldn't have allowed one complaint to limit children's literary choices.

The 2005 book is called "And Tango Makes Three." It draws on the real-life story of Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo in New York.

A spokesman for the Loudoun schools said Hatrick thought the book's content might not be developmentally appropriate for some students.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

First, if anything, I would restrict the book for anyone under the age of 12...

Whether or not there's a gay agenda or whatever, this IS another example of refusing to allow kids to be JUST KIDS...At a time when they should spend an ample amount of time to both daydream in a field and learn the necessary basics like math and language to get by in life, I would prevent ANY social dialogue from being part of a school's curriculum or material...

The main problem in school is that nobody has the nads to say "We'll talk about that when you get older." anymore...

I used to purchase books for a public library so I have more than a passing familiarity with children's literature.

To remove all social dialog from the materials in elementary libraries would mean removing 80 or 90% of the books. We could start with the Dick and Jane books or maybe Dr. Seuss.

I grew up watching bugs bunny dressing up as a woman.. It didn't make me gay. As a matter of fact, we didn't think anything of it..

do you think that reading a book like this would cause someone to be gay? I don't think this is an issue with the kids, it is an issue with the parents.... the kids probably never thought anything about it........

I never said books (or anything else) would cause someone to be gay (Jury's out on liking Streisand)...

But there's a VERY big difference between Bugs Bunny dressing up as a woman and this book...

The cartoon was meant for superficial entertainment and nothing more, whereas, according to your source, "This book teaches children that it's okay to be in, or know, someone who has a "non-traditional" family."

The issue I have is the underlying issue of whether or not children should be "being taught" something that adults can't even agree on...

I find it detrimental to any child's upbringing when they go to school and are being told that A,B and C is acceptable and then go home and hear that it's not...IRRELEVANT of who's right and who's wrong...

We can all find a gazillion things to be taught in school that are universally acceptable...Teach kids THAT first, and once that gets taught, THEN we'll start discussing more complex issues...

It's disturbing to know children here get grades that don't even compare to third world countries, but hey!...At least they won't be making fag jokes!...

These children would not have a clue about this book being anything other than a story, without the parents pointing out what the book is about?

No one forced anyone to read this book... it wasn't sent home with anyone purposely... it wasn't a "recomended" read.. It was checked out of a library...

Whether it be a cartoon or a book, it is still going to be seen by the child.. how the parent points it out, is how the child will know what it is...

btw.. BABs??? ick.

Did you NOT read your own source?...

"This book teaches children that it's okay to be in, or know, someone who has a "non-traditional" family."

Whether or not children KNOW they're being taught something is irrelevant...We can find a gazillion instances where children (and adults actually) are influenced by what they read and their surrounding in general...disputing that would be absurd...

What I'd like to see (from a hypocrisy standpoint; not a literal one) is someone try to place a book in a school library that " teaches children that it's NOT ok to be in, or know, someone who has a "non-traditional" family"

I'm willing to bet that the defenders of "Tango" would throw a hissy fit never before seen in the history of mankind even though the EXACT same logic would apply...

Amd I'm also willing to bet a book could be made without "these children having a clue about this book being anything other than a story" either...

Yes I read it... but the children would not know that info, unless the adults told them that is what it meant....
