Default Immigration law divides gay couples

I am all for quality border enforcement, but we shouldn't have a law that makes a US citizen choose between the love of their life and their country.

The Denver Post - Immigration law divides gay couples

Caught in the swirl of two of the most contentious issues on America's docket — domestic-partner rights and immigration reform — many face an impossible choice: Live apart from the person they love, or leave the country they love.
Bullshit commentary made to pull on emotional heartstrings...

If it was TRULY a country they love, they wouldn't have chosen to get their ass here illegally here in the first place...

That's not generally how it works. Generally the person is here legally on a temp visa (guest worker, vacation...). They fall in love. The American citizen loves this country and isn't wanting to leave. Instead of the American government facilitating immigration based on human connections, it bases it on arbitrary means.

And we should risk sovereignty and security because they are in love?..

Come on now Spencer... I expected more.

A heterosexual couple can marry, and that means that the immigration for the married partner becomes exponentially quicker and easier. Virtually in the bag so to speak. As there isn't a national equivilant for marriage nor does the federal government recognize the marriages/unions performed by the states, this is yet another example of how the status quo limits the coupling rights of homosexuals.

I've not said let everyone in, far from it, but in the cases where a homosexual partner of an American citizen wants to immigrate, they should be treated with equal importance of married heterosexual partners.

What on Earth are you talking about?

No one mentioned in the article was in the U.S. illegally.

And that is exactly what happened in two of the cases used to illustrate the point in the article. The other couple met via the Internet.

Quote:
Eight years ago, this couple — Green a U.S. citizen, Campuzano, a Mexican — met in cyberspace. Over time, their lives have taken on the feel of a virtual unreality.
Quote:
A vice president at two different companies, Black had lived and worked in Denver for four years on an H1-B work visa when he first met Joe (he asked that Joe's last name not be used to avoid future immigration problems). They became a couple during Christmas 2001 and began concocting a plan to stay together.

When Marcos called Stewart from São Paulo to tell him his routine student-visa renewal turned out to be anything but, Stewart had worked for Pfizer for more than seven years.

The two lived in Brooklyn. And Marcos was enrolled at St. Francis College, a full-time student studying English and pre-law. His plan was to apply to a U.S. law school.

As you may know if you have read any of my posts on gay issues,I support gay unions and these unions should carry the "full" benefits of marriage! That said,an illegal alien who is "married" to a US citizan is not guaranteed citizanship. They can "apply" for citezanship,it's not automatic straight or gay!

Until the law "changes" the applicant must meet established criteria described in Form I-485 (Application for Permanent Residence.) I would support changing the law to include gay applicants as long as they meet the rest of the criteria.I believe my position is fair and balanced but applicants as of this writing, are requred to go through the existing guidelines. Change the law and then I will support it.I would even be happy to help to change the law. I would offer my time on a petition drive and I'm not gay. The law should be blind to gender but the law should be 20/20 on security issues.

We of course respect your support for unions. We of course would agree to a balanced look at immigration, but on this issue, until the law is changed, there isn't a balance. The article is not supporting illegal immigration, it's a call to arms for all of us who would like to see equality at the border. Strong security met with unwavering equality. That is not the law that we currently have.

We would welcome your support in a equalization of the law, but until then we need a reasonable 'stop gap' method of dealing with these cases. Immediately recognizing unions as par to marriage would be a start, but perhaps a bit more reality in screening would be good. I don't see where any of these three individuals mentioned in the article pose a threat to security. The existing guidelines are unequal and petty. They need a change.

This just happened to a friend of a friend of mine and her girlfriend. She was here from France for 10 years, met a woman, fell in love, built a life, bought a house, all of that... with the understanding that her employer would sponsor her for citizenship, and as the time ran out, her employer renegged on the promise.

She had to leave the country, and has to stay out for a year before being allowed back in... so she moved to Canada, and not surprisingly, they were happy to have her come there.

Last week, her girlfriend, the American citizen, went to Canada to visit, and they got married there. Now they are talking about permanently relocating there, since Canada... you know... WANTS them.

What a shame. But at least it appears the couple will have a happy ending.
