I am all for quality border enforcement, but we shouldn't have a law that makes a US citizen choose between the love of their life and their country.

That's not generally how it works. Generally the person is here legally on a temp visa (guest worker, vacation...). They fall in love. The American citizen loves this country and isn't wanting to leave. Instead of the American government facilitating immigration based on human connections, it bases it on arbitrary means.

And we should risk sovereignty and security because they are in love?..

A heterosexual couple can marry, and that means that the immigration for the married partner becomes exponentially quicker and easier. Virtually in the bag so to speak. As there isn't a national equivilant for marriage nor does the federal government recognize the marriages/unions performed by the states, this is yet another example of how the status quo limits the coupling rights of homosexuals. I've not said let everyone in, far from it, but in the cases where a homosexual partner of an American citizen wants to immigrate, they should be treated with equal importance of married heterosexual partners.

What on Earth are you talking about? No one mentioned in the article was in the U.S. illegally.

Until the law "changes" the applicant must meet established criteria described in Form I-485 (Application for Permanent Residence.) I would support changing the law to include gay applicants as long as they meet the rest of the criteria.I believe my position is fair and balanced but applicants as of this writing, are requred to go through the existing guidelines. Change the law and then I will support it.I would even be happy to help to change the law. I would offer my time on a petition drive and I'm not gay. The law should be blind to gender but the law should be 20/20 on security issues.

We would welcome your support in a equalization of the law, but until then we need a reasonable 'stop gap' method of dealing with these cases. Immediately recognizing unions as par to marriage would be a start, but perhaps a bit more reality in screening would be good. I don't see where any of these three individuals mentioned in the article pose a threat to security. The existing guidelines are unequal and petty. They need a change.

She had to leave the country, and has to stay out for a year before being allowed back in... so she moved to Canada, and not surprisingly, they were happy to have her come there. Last week, her girlfriend, the American citizen, went to Canada to visit, and they got married there. Now they are talking about permanently relocating there, since Canada... you know... WANTS them. What a shame. But at least it appears the couple will have a happy ending. |
