Kansas governor erases protections for LGBT state employees with executive order

"With a swipe of his pen, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback wiped out protections offered to state employees facing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Brownback, a Republican, issued the executive order Tuesday, doing away with an order enacted by his predecessor, former Gov. Kathleen Sibelius. In 2007 Sibelius issued an order expanding workplace protections to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees of the state. Brownback, in signing his order, said this "ensures that state employees enjoy the same civil rights as all Kansans without creating additional 'protected classes' as the previous order did." He added "the order also reaffirms our commitment to hiring, mentoring and recognizing veterans and individuals with disabilities."

This one I don't get. I see absolutely no good reason to have done this. I seriously doubt the workplace is any worse the wear due to the fact some there may be engaged in homosexual relationships. No one should have to endure discriminatory practices by an employer over something like that--this just seems reckless to me.

I remember some people asking why Obama couldn't just do away with military discrimination against gays based on him giving an executive order.
This story is a perfect example of why.
Because the next guy could simply rescind that executive order and we're right almost back to where we started, except in a worse position with a new governor (president) who would obviously object to such legislation.

No good reason. I agree.
But the reason is obvious. Prejudice.

Brownback has associated with both Family Research Council and American Family Association. Both have a decent amount of examples of their prejudice towards gays.

Also...
In 2006, Brownback blocked the confirmation of federal judicial nominee Janet T. Neff because she had attended a same-sex commitment ceremony.[136][137][138] At first, he agreed to lift the block only if Neff would recuse herself from all cases involving same-sex unions.[136][137][138] Brownback later dropped his opposition.[136][137][138]

Also...
In January 2012, Brownback did not include Kansas's sodomy law in a list of unenforced and outdated laws that the legislature should repeal.[143][144][145][146] Gay rights advocates had asked his administration to recommend its repeal because the law has been unenforceable since the Supreme Court's Lawrence v. Texas decision in 2003.[143][144][145][146][147]

In February 2012, the Brownback administration supported a religious freedom bill that would have stopped cities, school districts, universities, and executive agencies from having nondiscrimination laws or policies that covered sexual orientation or gender identity.[148][149][150]
While some can claim that they just have an issue with gay marriage, Brownback is not in that crowd.
He's got an axe to grind regarding gays.

Must be a reactionary backlash to the piles of victory cake being served to gay rights movement as of late. This too will pass.

The reason, whether we like it or not, whether it is fair or not, is that most normal functional people are sick to death of having their culture forcefully displaced by an endless freakshow.

The people who want these protections, have grossly over played their hand. Tolerance for sexual deviancy is becoming unashionable, as ih as numerous times since ancient times.

ROFLMAO!
You keep telling yourself if that is what gets you to sleep at night, sunshine... :thumbsup

The reality is that most people don't want discrimination against gays.
And I can show you poll after poll documenting that fact. :thumbsup

A Republican opposed to civil rights?
Is anyone the least bit surprised about this?

Perhaps they'll even chime in with the fact that the Republican Party supported civil rights in the 1960's before the KKK abandoned the Democratic Party around 1980 and became Republicans in the South.

What they will forget, ignore, whatever is that Lincoln argued against popular sovereignty.
