HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The federal government is suing Pennsylvania over physical fitness tests given its applicants for state trooper positions, saying the practice illegally discriminates against women.

The Justice Department's lawsuit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Harrisburg.

It says the use of the tests to screen and select the applicants for the entry-level positions amounts to a pattern of employment discrimination.

A state police spokeswoman says the agency has not seen the lawsuit and cannot comment on it.

The lawsuit says much greater percentages of male applicants than female applicants passed the physical fitness tests going back to 2003.

Duh, it is a physical fitness test. Men are built different then women. Unless the test is rigged unnecessarily tough, as in beyond what is needed to perform the duties of the job, then this lawsuit should be thrown out.

If thier standard is anything like Anchorage's standards seem to be, the bar is set to low. I've seen a fair number of cops here looking pretty soggy around the middle, doubt they could catch a cold let alone a fleeing subject.

I would agree.
Unless they think that being confronted by a felon who is close enough to grapple with the officer, the felon will lower his standards to accommodate the fact that it's a woman police officer...

When in reality, I think it would be more likely that felons would think a woman would be weaker, and thus felons would be more inclined to attack if the police officer was a woman.

Additionally of interest:
The lawsuit says nearly all male recruits pass the initial physical fitness tests, while about 30 percent of women flunk it.

"bar is set to low" is exactly right.
I just found what appears to be the standards... (I've changed the formatting to make the standards more clear)
The standards for the pass or fail test are:
* 14 inch vertical jump;
* 23.5 seconds for an agility run;
* 77 seconds for a 300-meter run;
* 13 push ups; and
* 17:48 for a 1.5 mile run. Applicants must meet or better the standard in each event.

Jesus. I came across something the other day that put the AVERAGE 1.5 mile run-time for somebody in their 40's around 16 minutes or so (going from memory, but I think that's about right).
Can't find the link right now, but check out this link which rates the percentile a person is in if they can run 1.5 miles in ____ time.
Running Test
For example, if you are 31 years old and run 1.5 miles in 13:22, the row in the 30-39 age-group table corresponds to a percentile ranking of 45. That means your Running Test performance was faster than 45% of the men in your reference age-group who took the test.
The 1.5 mile run is NOT really challenging (for 17:48) for what I would want from a police officer. Neither is the push up requirement or the vertical jump.

These standards appear pathetic and low!

The standards are to be discarded in favor of political correctness, public safety is not a consideration. Who cares if the female officer is ineffective in subduing a violent suspect endangering everyone else, diversity must be celebrated. Discrimination is determined by an employer not having the quota of race or gender in the workforce, racism or gender discrimination is OK if the government practices it.
