I generally expect a more intelligent brand of post from you, Comet. Color me disappointed. This sounds more like the kind of untrue generalization Skydancer is so fond of.

There will always be protests, regardless of how perspicuous and logical the issue is. There were those who protested blacks being allowed to go to college, women voting, interracial couples being allowed to marry, etc...

The fact that there are protests does not automatically translate to the protest being grounded in common sense. There are a lot of people who are full of hate, closed-minded and scared to death of change. We cannot judge ourselves based upon their views.

There is simply no niche in Western Civilization for gay "marriage." It is alien to almost all of the art, literature, religion, law, custom and language of those cultures

Meanwhile marriage is held up as one of the highest sacraments, secular and religious that the populations of those cultures share.

This might well be grossly unfair, unkind, and insensitive, but it is a fact.

And then along come some people who announce that for some reason, they know better, and have a self-proclaimed right to reinvent those cultures, and merge what has been seen as the most repugnant with the most sublime.

Of course most people are going to balk! And, they are justified.

Many states have recognized gay marriage? Five by judicial decree. Three by referendum. One by legislation. Of course the 32 states that have passed referendums confirming the traditional definition of marriage don't count as many.

But the dream of flight, even flight to the moon is ancient and enshrined in the cultures. Spaceflight required no recreation of the culture-- it was an expression of it.

You know, if the gay marriage movers would accept so much as different terms for their desired unions they could gain a lot of what they want. Language has that kind of power.

And they know this, that's why they must insist upon the terms as well.

Why then, would you call people who do not believe in gay marriage morons? There are hundreds of millions of people who think that way, are they all morons?

My apologies to anyone I may have offended by my comments. They were based more on sarcasm and humor, but I apologize nonetheless. Obviously I do not think everyone who is against gay marriage is a moron. Two of my own children are against gay marriage.

A better way of phrasing my words would have been to say the mentality to not allow individuals of legal age to marry is a weak one.

Equality for all, especially with gay marriage, is something I am highly passionate about and an issue close to my heart. Regardless, I selected my words more in sarcastic humor than a literal translation.

Thank you MrLiberty and Lurch for bringing this to my attention and please accept my apologies if you (or anyone else) were personally offended. I do not consider either of you morons and highly respect your opinions and participation on this forum.

You weren't offensive at all. Even though I don't agree with you completely, it's refreshing to see civil discussion on this topic for a change. This is the way topics like this should be debated.
What surprises me most about all this is that it's France where that protest is taking place. People tend to put them on a pedestal sometimes in terms of being "progressive".

I don't get personnally offend that easy, I was just disappointed because you tend to be one of the more intelligent, level-headed posters around here and I enjoy them because of that. The "moron" post was just far below your usual standards.
Anyway, apology not required but accepted none the less. Thank you.

West can be changed to East, and East can be changed to West. The sun will continue to make its appearance where it has always risen, and Marriage will continue to be the union of a man and a woman.

Live with the term "alliance" for anything else, people.

Separate but equal is not equal. We fight for equal rights for the sexes and we will eventually win equal rights for the sexes.

I find it interesting that you see this as a gender rights issue. How do you come to that opinion given that gov't traditionally doesn't have seperate rules for men vs women? The basic rule being: The gov't will recognise any marriage of a consenting adult to another consenting adult of the opposite sex.
