Thought I would share today's message.

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened. – Jonah 3:10

Quote:
Jonah is a fascinating story of redemption. The most interesting thing to me is that the city of Nineveh repents, but Jonah does not! “But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry.” (Jonah 4:1)

Nineveh was known as a place of unspeakable darkness. Yet the king sees his wicked ways and God stays his hand of judgment. This act of mercy causes Jonah to become angry with God. Yet even in his self-righteous temper tantrum, God’s mercy tries to reason with Jonah.

This story points to another time much later when Jesus would come to the world and challenge both the sin of wickedness and the sin of self-righteousness. And just like Jonah’s day, the wicked were more prone to change than the religious!

Matthew 4:1-4 – Man does not live on bread alone

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:1-4

Quote:
Notice the Scripture states that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert. In ancient times, the desert is equated with a place incapable of sustaining life. Matthew (with Luke and Mark) is stating that Jesus was going into a place where His only hope would be in God. Notice that the journey into the desert was the first act of Jesus ministry after His baptism. Do you feel like you are in a wilderness? We may think that we are being set up for destruction, but God is training us to live a life of dependence upon Him and not our surroundings. This was the path of Jesus and we should not be surprised that this is a part of our journey as well.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. – Matthew 5:7

Quote:
Mercy was unique to the Roman culture of Jesus day. Yet Christians conquered the sword of Rome with mercy. They picked up the dying; they cared for the elderly and widows; they reached out to the marginal in society. When we are able to bring mercy to the weak and helpless in a community we create a culture that we benefit from – for we need mercy as much as anyone else.

Matthew 5:13 – You are the salt of the earth

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. – Matthew 5:13

Quote:
Salt was a preservative back then. It was packed into meats to keep it edible and to flavor it. The picture that Jesus paints here is one where we are called to preserve our workplace, our household, our neighborhood. When we don’t flavor it, we have lost our effectiveness for God and man. There is a distinctiveness to our lives as we preserve our surroundings for the glory of God.

Quote:
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. – Philippians 2:3-4
The enemy of harmony and unity is selfish ambition. It quickly divides us.
Paul is not saying that we should have an inferiority complex or belittle our own abilities. Rather, Christian love puts others above selfish ambition.

God bless you as you read the words of the Bible passage for today.

Revelation 20:12 – And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. – Revelation 20:12

Quote:
To think of a God who judges seems medieval, yet we recognize that this world is not what it is supposed to be. We get mad when we experience a business transaction that seems unbalanced. We protest when we see those in power taking advantage of the poor and helpless. We feel passion about what we consider fair or right, and we judge things that don’t match up to that “right-ness”. But our judgments of the world around us reveal that we are in the image of a Creator who will judge all of His creation someday.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:26-27

Quote:
Notice the language – “Let us…” The creation was an event of celebration within the Triune God. Because of this, we need community as well. That’s why man alone in paradise was not enough; there had to be another like him. Man and woman were created together as an expression of the joyful, amazing Creator. Therefore our relationship with God was not meant to be lived alone, we were made for the joy (and challenge) of community.

This verse gives me comfort in knowing God even supports my psychological well-being.
What a creator!

Quote:
For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect. (Rom_4:13-14)
Dear Lord, forgive me for my frequent attempts to accomplish by my performance that which You offer by promise. Lord, I see that this shows disdain for faith in You and for Your promises to me. Please give me a fresh new awareness of the excellence of faith and the power of Your promises, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 2:18 (King James Version)

Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

Quote:
Evening Devotion from Charles Spurgeon

“Satan hindered us.”

Since the first hour in which goodness came into conflict with evil, it has never ceased to be true in spiritual experience, that Satan hinders us. From all points of the compass, all along the line of battle, in the vanguard and in the rear, at the dawn of day and in the midnight hour, Satan hinders us. If we toil in the field, he seeks to break the ploughshare; if we build the wall, he labours to cast down the stones; if we would serve God in suffering or in conflict-everywhere Satan hinders us. He hinders us when we are first coming to Jesus Christ. Fierce conflicts we had with Satan when we first looked to the cross and lived. Now that we are saved, he endeavours to hinder the completeness of our personal character. You may be congratulating yourself, “I have hitherto walked consistently; no man can challenge my integrity.” Beware of boasting, for your virtue will yet be tried; Satan will direct his engines against that very virtue for which you are the most famous. If you have been hitherto a firm believer, your faith will ere long be attacked; if you have been meek as Moses, expect to be tempted to speak unadvisedly with your lips. The birds will peck at your ripest fruit, and the wild boar will dash his tusks at your choicest vines. Satan is sure to hinder us when we are earnest in prayer. He checks our importunity, and weakens our faith in order that, if possible, we may miss the blessing. Nor is Satan less vigilant in obstructing Christian effort. There was never a revival of religion without a revival of his opposition. As soon as Ezra and Nehemiah begin to labour, Sanballat and Tobiah are stirred up to hinder them. What then? We are not alarmed because Satan hindereth us, for it is a proof that we are on the Lord’s side, and are doing the Lord’s work, and in his strength we shall win the victory, and triumph over our adversary.

O Holy Lord, I confess that in my own natural resources there is no innate holiness. I can find forgiveness of sin and true righteousness from You alone. Help me to understand the difference between Your law which convicts and Your promises which bring life, through Christ my Lord, Amen.

Daily prayer courtesy of Hoekstra

From Spurgeon's evening devotions for August 9th-

Quote:
“He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.”
- Mar_16:9
Mary of Magdala was the victim of a fearful evil. She was possessed by not one devil only, but seven. These dreadful inmates caused much pain and pollution to the poor frame in which they had found a lodging. Hers was a hopeless, horrible case. She could not help herself, neither could any human succour avail. But Jesus passed that way, and unsought, and probably even resisted by the poor demoniac, he uttered the word of power, and Mary of Magdala became a trophy of the healing power of Jesus. All the seven demons left her, left her never to return, forcibly ejected by the Lord of all. What a blessed deliverance! What a happy change! From delirium to delight, from despair to peace, from hell to heaven! Straightway she became a constant follower of Jesus, catching his every word, following his devious steps, sharing his toilsome life; and withal she became his generous helper, first among that band of healed and grateful women who ministered unto him of their substance. When Jesus was lifted up in crucifixion, Mary remained the sharer of his shame: we find her first beholding from afar, and then drawing near to the foot of the cross. She could not die on the cross with Jesus, but she stood as near it as she could, and when his blessed body was taken down, she watched to see how and where it was laid. She was the faithful and watchful believer, last at the sepulchre where Jesus slept, first at the grave whence he arose. Her holy fidelity made her a favoured beholder of her beloved Rabboni, who deigned to call her by her name, and to make her his messenger of good news to the trembling disciples and Peter. Thus grace found her a maniac and made her a minister, cast out devils and gave her to behold angels, delivered her from Satan, and united her for ever to the Lord Jesus. May I also be such a miracle of grace!

PRAYER from Our Daily Homily Devotional from F.B. Meyer,

O God, may the great cloud of witnesses, who have trodden the Pilgrim Way before us, be to us an example of a godly life, so that we may run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus. AMEN.
