In a stream of diplomatic cables, embassy security officers warned their superiors at the State Department of a worsening threat from Islamic extremists, and requested that the teams of military personnel and State Department security guards who were already on duty be kept in service.

The requests were denied, but they were largely focused on extending the tours of security guards at the American Embassy in Tripoli — not at the diplomatic compound in Benghazi, 400 miles away. And State Department officials testified this week during a hearing by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that extending the tour of additional guards — a 16-member military security team — through mid-September would not have changed the bloody outcome because they were based in Tripoli, not Benghazi.
Focus Was on Tripoli in Requests for Security in Libya

it's a short article.
So the proposition is that because the embassy officials requested more security in Tripoli, Benghazi was safe. Never mind that our consulate had been attacked 2 or 3 times before and the red cross and other consulates had closed down. It was safe because the Libyans had to be our friends thanks to splendid leading from behind policy.

According to the OP midlevel state department officials refused requests for more security thereby absolving Clinton and Obama of responsibility for the decision made by their subordinates. It is a curious formulation where responsibility is meaningless.

The OP throws the Marines under the bus by denigrating their combat capability against untrained militia fighters. It ignores the possibility the attack might not have occured if more defenders had been at the consulate.

no, meaning if requests came from Tripoli that is 400 miles away maybe it wouldn't have made any difference.
But there is more afoot here than meets the eye, looks like.

You like a good conspiracy, so let me tell you a staff member at another news site I go to posted some wiki leak stuff that may be pertinent.
It seems that in 2008 we had a contract or agreement w/ Gaddafi for oil (big deal we all assumed that right?), but what we didn't know is that Stevens true mission or dual mission was to secure those oil leases/contracts with the present controllers of it.
Furthermore it looks like barring removal of files in that embassy they were to be burned- by our guys.
so don't that just twist the subway sandwich?
and here we are trying to fight politics like it matters. both parties administrations wanted access to that oil for the US...

Inept? Inept was how your guy handled 9-11 attacks. After months of warning about impending attacks. How many died in the 9-11 cheney/bush fiasco? Nobody fired. No heads rolled. Benghazi is small potatoes in comparison and you guys are screaming for blood?

That plot was hatched during the Clinton Adm., but your bias won't allow you to see that. And Bush didn't lie about it.

We now know that Obama watched this in real time and refused to send help. He should be put in prison for treason and lying to the American public.
