Students pinched by birth control pill costs

Quote:
Cal Poly’s Health and Counseling Services has seen the cost of contraceptives triple in recent months, according to center Director Martin Bragg.

The higher cost, he said, is the result of 2005 federal legislation that barred university health clinics from access to lower-priced drugs.

And while the local Planned Parenthood organization has kept rates the same for its clients paying for birth control, the organization must raise money to cover rising costs to buy the drugs from suppliers, according to its spokeswoman.

Bragg said “thousands” of Cal Poly students seek birth control from the university’s health services center. He said he didn’t have specific numbers, but he estimates a month’s supply of birth control pills now costs Cal Poly students about $25.

That amount isn’t as much as the monthly supply of $40 to $50 for pills in other parts of the country, but it’s more than the $5 to $10 per month that once was standard.

“Students are feeling the increased costs,” he said.

Officials at Planned Parenthood say the higher prices are putting birth control out of reach for many financially strapped students, and they want Congress to make the issue a priority.

In Washington, Planned Parenthood has found a sympathetic ear in Democratic Sens. Barack Obama of Illinois and and Claire McCaskill of Missouri. They’ve teamed up on a bill that would reverse the 2005 provision, hoping to bring back discounted prices to college campuses.

A similar bill is pending in the House of Representatives.

Bragg said Cal Poly officials won’t have specific data about how much the higher prices have affected students’ use of birth control pills until this summer.
Once again, personal responsibility takes a back seat...

Complaining about the costs?...here's an idea...

Snap your damn legs shut and save 100% of the cost!...And don't cry because the "big, bad" companies that make pills that give you the ability to be a whore want more cash for it and the government doesn't come running to "help" you...

Just goes to show once again that if prolifers could just cut to the quick and bring back a Scarlet Letter, you'd never hear another word about "fetal rights" again.

Pretty much...

Unacceptable behavior just a few years ago is now considered "trendy"...

It was only just a few years ago that I was a full-time student and I never saw where it was unacceptable for a woman to have sex with her boyfriend in college. Where was I?

Ability to be a whore?

I'm sure not getting much is a bitter pill to swallow.

What Jallman doesn't understand is that deep down you aren't upset that liberated women are having lots of sex. You're just pissed that lots of them weren't having it with you.

I think you and I can agree that no one should be having sex at that age unless they're in a longterm, committed relationship as compared to "just hooking up" or having multiple partners beause that's what they do on "Sex & the City"...

So my question is "What is the percentage of college women in the former situation as compared to the latter?"...

And my guess would be 10% tops...and I think I'm going a little high with that percentage...

Welcome to the new "way of life" that young people are now considering acceptable...

Want another?...
