Because we, in America, do not live by mob rule. We respect the rights of the individuals. Abortion isn't the only issue that the Supreme Court had "force on the country". A majority in the south still wanted segregation but that got shot down by the Supreme Court.

I love how people love to bring our racial issues up in comparison to EVERYTHING!!!! Considering how black people got here in the first place, segregation was a small issue as far as I'm concerned. And what about the American Indians? That the same race clamoring for segregation killed many of the inhabitants of this country. It seems the moral compass of many white people is pointing far south of north.

I mean, if most of America doesn't want abortion - as its detractors always claim - why can't it win at the ballot box?
