But for the "honest" R&D Companies, I have yet to hear that they are getting funding from the government for alternative sources (Gore's dreams aside) other than grants. Please correct me if I am wrong.

To me, a fiscal conservative (read: monetary tight-ass), that would be the best $X$ spent... job creation, reduced oil dependancy, reduced polution, AMERICAN BORN INDUSTRY.
