The right and proper thing is to do what is right even if I will not directly or personally benefit from my decision. But then that would mean one would need to know the difference between right and wrong, and have a desire to do what is right.

Saying that others SHOULD do something because it benefits another is a great idea, philosophically, but one is best off, IMO, dealing with science when discussing a controversy such as this; when duscussing medical linkages, anyway...
