I recently had occasion to discuss just such a situation with our "Regional Mental Health Authority".
They suggested that if two family members would sign papers that the person was a danger to himself or others then he could be involuntarily committed at the state's expense. If, however, he voluntarily committed himself, he would have to have proof of ability to pay.
It just doesn't make sense to me that mentally ill people are being allowed to continue getting sicker and sicker until they really are a danger when early intervention could possibly allow them to become or remain contributing members of society.
