Default What's the best story you ever read?

What is your all time favorite story, be it an entire book or an essay/short story?

My all time favorite to date is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I read it in the 80's and it left me with that feeling, you know, that I didn't want the story to end; the kind of tale that gives goose bumps as the author draws you on toward the conclusion. It kind of had everything. Adventure, human interest. Plus the back drop was the French Revolution. A man hunt involved an inspector I am sure our modern bumbling cops are based on.
And of course, a great hero Jean Valjean.

How 'bout you?
