I think that is giving his "sensitivity" and "artistic nature" too much credit. He is a "sensitive" child however I think it is his privileged upbringing that has created a sense of "entitlement" and it is this that makes his character the "weaker" character when compared to Hassan.
It's like the old saying about the tree that is watered daily having shallow roots and thus being weak and more prone to falling over. While a tree that wasn't spoiled with water grows deep roots.
Hassan has a stronger character. On some level even Amir is capable of recognizing that.
