Also I find it interesting from a biblical history standpoint, that Nineveh is the last strong hold. Jonah didn't want to go there, but God threw him into the belly of the whale (if you take the story literally). Ever since then (or if you don't take it literally at least since Judaism/Christianity spread to the region), there has been a community of believers there.
I just think it' extraordinary that this outpost Jonah didn't want to visit, is the saving grace of these people.
