This becomes increasingly unfunny when you have an 18-year-old facing a four year prison term on a non-violent crime.
We nearly bankrupted ourselves a couple of years ago hiring attorneys to keep him out of prison, for exactly this reason.
There was nothing remotely funny about it.
Rape is not an appropriate punishment for any crime, but especially not for a non-violent one such as selling marijuana.
Unfortunately, younger, weaker, softer prisoners- first timers incarcerated for non-violent crimes- are the typical victims of prison rape.

I'm agreeing; it's not funny. Until recently, I kind of always thought the prison rape jokes were hyperbole but after coming into contact with a nonprofit that works to end sexual violence in prison, I realize it's actually a huge deal. People get brutalized in prison and, often, it isn't by the other inmates. It's by the guards themselves. It's especially rampant in juvenile detention facilities which is really sad.
By the way, if anyone wants to show their support to inmates surviving these conditions, the nonprofit I was speaking of has a holiday card campaign just to send a message of hope to survivors of sexual violence. They handwrite every message and make sure it is delivered to an inmate.
