Yes. I live in Alabama. But all that I know is what I read.
My county has been hard-hit because we are still very rural with a lot of sweet potato, fruit, chicken and truck farmers. They say that they have been advertising for workers with no takers.
Another interesting thing that our local paper pointed out is that, according to some farm owners, it is not just the undocumented workers who are leaving in some cases. Workers with proper visas are leaving either because they have undocumented family members or because they are unhappy with the hostile environment that this law has created toward Hispanics.
I still have not figured out why, with all the other problems in our state, passing this law was so important to our legislature. I know a lot of noise was made about crimes committed by illegal immigrants. But I read somewhere recently that only about 4% of those in Alabama prisons are in the country illegally. It hardly seems to me that such a small number merits either the sort of attention the issue gets or draconian solutions such as this law.
