Charisse, who died Tuesday in Los Angeles at 86, took up dance for health reasons after contracting polio. Born Tula Ellice Finklea in Amarillo, Texas, by 16 she was touring Europe with the Ballets Russes.

In his 1959 memoir Steps in Time, Astaire called Charisse "beautiful dynamite" and said, "When you've danced with her, you stay danced with."

Another great one gone. And so beautiful.
Does anyone remember Brigadoon? It was mentioned in the article. I loved that movie.
