Perhaps in your lifetime? A colleague of mine was of Italian decent, her grandparents came over on a boat to Ellis Island, and only spoke Italian to their dying day. They did not pass along their language to their American children (it's virtually impossible, I know from experience), and little is left of their customs. Obviously, with time they all assimilated. Jeez,
I understand you feel there is a need for federal revamping of immigration laws and enforcement. But in the meantime, if they cannot come up with a plan that does not include sweeping amnesty, (and the majority of us are against what they have come up with) what would you have individual states do? Nothing is unacceptable as an answer.
Also let me point out we are still a union of states. If a state sees there is a federal law being broken, they call in the feds. to take action. That is what is done in many of these cases. Local and state police used to have the authority to pick the individuals up and turn them over to immigration authorities. Some would call for that again.

While we are waiting for all the political maneuvering to simmer down, I just saw a video about robotic milking machines that need no human after they rare once set up. The investment cost the farmer 1.2 million dollars, but he said he now doesn't have to worry about labor shortages.
So there's another dynamic at work. Maybe this argument will be old hat soon.
