How long exactly do you think it takes to assimilate? If you're a 35 year old man who comes here and works let's say as a truck driver, or a cab driver, having little interaction with others that speak the language, do you think you'll learn English soon? Perhaps in your lifetime? A colleague of mine was of Italian decent, her grandparents came over on a boat to Ellis Island, and only spoke Italian to their dying day. They did not pass along their language to their American children (it's virtually impossible, I know from experience), and little is left of their customs. Obviously, with time they all assimilated. Jeez,
