Despite her withdrawal from the Italian Open, Sharapova will become the WTA No 1 on Monday after Justine Henin's shock retirement last week.

Jankovic wins the Italian Open

ROME, May 18 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alize Cornet in Sunday's final at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome.

The win completed a successful title defense by the event's fourth seed, who reached the final in a walkover when No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova could not play in Saturday's semifinal because of a left-calf injury.

The Serbian beat Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5 6-1 in last season's final.

Sunday's was her sixth career title on the women's tennis tour and her first since winning the DFS Classic in Birmingham, England last June.

Jankovic saved nine of 12 break points and converted seven of nine break points.
This is a great show of Serbian dominance and a crushing defeat of the Russian tennis clan, which had no players in the finals because the one player that had a chance couldn't make it through warm-ups without self-damage...

I don't know if North Pole Resident will ever recover...
