Well, if he thought of it on his own or someone suggested it, I think it was a good decision to give up golf during his presidency. It does send the wrong message when you have to go get the prez off the golf course to tell him how the troops are doing.

In the PBS Documentary on the Presidents series episode on GHW Bush he specifically said he made sure NOT to become self imprisoned during the Gulf War because of the terrible image that was portrayed when Jimmy Carter was locked in the White House as a result of the Iranian Hostage crisis.
