Some people laugh at the word "ice box" when used to mean refrigerator. I have heard it referred to as a "Frigidaire" which is a brand name. Through all the technical advances some kept the same word to describe a box that keeps food from spoiling. "Coke" for coca-cola. "Pocket book" is another one. I don't know when it originated, but some still call a purse by that name.

Let's just wind this up by saying-A gay by any other name would still sound as queer.

I know and have heard and probably used every last one of those. Where I grew up we also put our food in a sack, eat dinner in the middle of the day and supper at night, have conniptions, gather a mess of beans from our garden and eat a bait of them afterward.

I grew up in the north Alabama foothills of the Appalachians and we speak archaic/colloquial English with the best of them

But I have still never heard anyone say "I feel gay" meaning "I feel happy."
