Some people laugh at the word "ice box" when used to mean refrigerator. I have heard it referred to as a "Frigidaire" which is a brand name. Through all the technical advances some kept the same word to describe a box that keeps food from spoiling. "Coke" for coca-cola. "Pocket book" is another one. I don't know when it originated, but some still call a purse by that name.

Let's just wind this up by saying-A gay by any other name would still sound as queer.
my mother uses "pocket book"

she also call the refrigerator a 'fridge. I don't know if that's short for Frigidaire or refrigerator.

she also uses "coke" for all cola flavored beverages - and kleenex for all tissues
