Quite frankly, I never heard the word, gay, used in regular culture to denote happiness (except in Christmas songs) in my entire life. And I am 51.
The fact is that, by the 60s & 70s, the use of gay to denote happiness was archaic. Honestly, when was the last time you heard someone say something like "I am feeling gay today," meaning, "I feel happy"??
I have never seen or heard it used that way anywhere but in very old novels and in movies set in the early 20th century or before.
