But that was when not many were out yet. And he was out and life was very difficult for him sometimes.
I don't remember how old I was when I first heard it but it was about the same time that I heard "queer."

Where I grew up, "the main stream" didn't use any words for homosexual before the seventies. But kids did. And the popular words at my school in the sixties were queer, gay and lesbo.

At some point gay people got tired of it being used as a slur and decided to embrace it. I find it extremely amusing that it upsets those who want to insult us now. They have had to look for new slurs. Poor babies!
