I don't think my Dad ever had a drivers license. He went to sea at a very young age as did many of my uncles and cousins. Either the town would be within walking distance or he would have someone pick him up at the dock.
He was stopped for a routine traffic check once while driving my aunt's car. He told the officer when asked that he didn't own a drivers license. The officer asked him how many years he'd been driving. He told him forty years. "How many accidents have you had?"
"None"
"Have a nice day, sir."
Exchanges like that one wouldn't happen today!
