Calling for the police why? Because they are the only ones allowed to act loony and wave signs at a political rally? Because an opposing protester was trying to rush up to their candidate and give him a book? Greeted with open arms, no, but their reaction was an over-reaction.

If I attempted to curb stomp every lunatic religious-righty that has ever gotten in my face yelling about my immortal soul being in danger and trying to shove a bible or tract into my hand, I imagine I'd be in prison for life by now.

I suppose only politicians and famous folk are allowed to have their entourages beat down anyone that approaches them on the street in a beligerant manner. The rest of us must use constraint and common decency, and deflect the assaults by simply walking away while loudly proclaiming "I'm not interested, leave me alone!"
