I am not afraid of most snakes. Poisonous snake I am afraid of. I consider this to be good sense.
And my motto as regards recognition is, "When in doubt, proceed with caution."
I once had a snake fall into my face while remodeling a house. The ceiling of one room was plywood and when I pulled it down the snake slid down right on top of me.
I didn''t stick around to find out if it was poisonous or not. I hauled ass out of there and came back armed with a long-handled hoe. (It was a chicken snake.)
