TOLEDO, Ohio (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain on Thursday denied assertions published in The New York Times that he once had a close relationship with a female lobbyist whose clients had business before his Senate committee.

I'm disappointed in The New York Times piece. It's not true," he told reporters in Toledo, Ohio, his wife, Cindy, standing by his side.

He added that he has never "done anything that would betray the public trust or make a decision" that would favor a particular group.

His wife added that her husband always puts family and country first, and is "a man of great character."

The New York Times issued a statement Thursday saying it stands by its reporting and that "the story speaks for itself."

Remember folks, this is the NYT breaking this story. Some say where there is smoke, there is fire. I say..sometimes smoke is just smoke, time will tell.
This is just the New York Times being it's typical political Democratic gunslingers...

Don't believe me?...Check this out...

Here's the story first coming to light 2 months ago...Notice the date...

Then...Over ONE MONTH later...the same paper ENDORSES the guy for the Republican nomination!!!...

This was a setup all along...the story itself seems to be a simple "he said-she said", but the TIMING is remarkable...

The New York Times couldn't hurt the Republicans by trashing McCain two months ago because he was usually running 3rd or 4th in the contests...taking a swipe at him would've just made the guys in front look better (at the time, Mitt and Huck)...The NYT would have to find trash on THEM which they didn't have...So the NYT sits on the story, HELPS McCain get to frontrunner status with an endorsement, THEN when it's clear he'll be the nominee, they take the story they've been sitting on and make it public to hurt him...

Imagine that...Endorsing the guy you know you're going to stab later...What objective journalism!...
