I must admit I have not read her book. I cannot assume anything about it one way or the other. But if the way society has changed is an indication of
the road it will continue to go down in reguards to citisenship, stewardship, responsibility-the "Village" is not what it used to be.
People never used to get too nosey about other peoples' affairs (and that had good and bad points, I'll admit), but they did take it upon themselves to assume the parents of a child would appreciate a phone call if the kid was seen heading for trouble. Granted, we don't have the "community" anymore or at least rarely. But the community
was an extended family of sorts. All kids knew someone might see them, so
most thought twice about going over the edge.
So it's cock eyed to say it takes a villiage, because we don't
have the villiage anymore.

A big part of community cohesiveness was the networking moms did with other moms. Like their counterpar -the businessmens' lunch, those coffee clutches and telephone conversations helped to improve living conditions, promoted safety in the home, brought the latest medical findings to the forefront!
I think a lot of us would like to get that villiage back or construct something like it. But unless you want to live in destitute poverty, both parents have to work.
I would like to see a "Just Stay Home" movement for women (or men) who feel they are better suited to housewifery or part time only work! Now that we've got some stuff out of the way-like-if you do work you are entitled to equal pay, I think it's time to take a hard look at why it evolved that women stayed home in the first place. Could it be nature picked them as best suited (usually) for the job? And honoring mothers is something we as a society should get back to in full force. I could go on, but.....
